Project requirements: replacing an old evaporative air cooling system

Gestamp is Spanish multinational engineering company, an international group dedicated to the design, development and manufacture of metal automotive components. The company counts over 100 production plants in 21 countries.

The company was looking for a way of improving thermal comfort and ventilation inside their industrial plant located in Linares, Southern Spain. The plant consisted on three buildings of the same shape, 32 m wide x 176 m long; the total area to be cooled was then 16,896 m2.

Solution

The company was not new to evaporative cooling technology. In fact, the plant had metal evaporative coolers installed for already 10 years. The management contacted Australair for maintenance and servicing of those evaporative coolers. After several assessments, they found out that they were so damaged that maintenance was not possible anymore without losing cooling effectiveness. The management, together with the design engineer, decided then to totally replace the old units with brand new polymer made Breezair evaporative coolers.

Air cooling system installation

Old evaporative coolers were wall mounted, but with easy access from the close roof for service & maintenance purposes. The management chose TBS 580 model with axial fan & MagIQtouch controller to control the whole system. Due to the big dimensions of the building, Australair installed 60 Breezair evaporative cooling units, both wall mounted & roof mounted.

Results

The Andalusian hot temperatures, that could overcome 40°C on Summer days, dropped by several degrees, to obtain an internal temperature of more comfortable 24-26 °C. The old evaporative coolers were completely removed, since Breezair units were totally taking over the job.
Electrical consumption has also improved, compared to the previously installed units, saving 67% on energy and running costs.
